We are happy to share that our paper “Dutch without loan words? A large-scale study of Dutch puristic word lists (1550-1850)”, written together with PhD researcher Nelle Simonet, has been accepted for presentation at CLIN36 in Brussels this September!

In this paper, we look at twenty historical Dutch word lists that proposed Dutch alternatives to loanwords between 1550 and 1850. By digitising, normalising and analysing almost 64,000 lemmas, we investigate how ideas about “proper” Dutch vocabulary circulated across three centuries. The results show that these lists were not isolated attempts at linguistic clean-up, but part of a strongly connected tradition in which authors repeatedly reused, reshaped and passed on existing material.

More technical details and a full write-up will follow soon. Stay tuned if you want to know more about our research!
